Nicklas Larsen Schmidt was born in 1976 in Aarhus, Denmark.

His main musical education he received at the composition faculty of St. Petersburg State Conservatoire named after Rimsky-Korsakov, in Russia, from which he graduated in 2003 (Diploma with Honors).
His main tutor was composer prof. Alexander Mnatsakanyan, a former pupil of Dmitry Shostakovich.
From 2004-06 Schmidt studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Music with professor Bent Sørensen, Niels Rosing-Schow and Hans Abrahamsen.
His debut concert was held in the Copenhagen concert venue "Rundetårn" in february 2007 with participation of renowned Danish artists as cellist Morten Zeuthen and The Hymnia Chamber Choir, conducted by Flemming windekilde.

While studying in St. Petersburg Nicklas Schmidt won the Musical Olympus Young Composers Award 2001
for
Rhapsody for Strings & Percussion - a piece that was subsequently performed at the Musical Olympus Festival at the Hermitage Theatre in St. Petersburg June 2001, where Damian Iorio conducted the St. Petersburg Camerata Orchestra. In September 2002 the Rhapsody opened the season for the Novosibirsk Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Alexander Polishuk.

Nicklas Schmidt had his Russian debut concert In March 2003 when the Diploma Piece Symphony no. 1 was performed at a concert in the Shuvalovsky Palace in St. Petersburg. The young talented Darrell Ang conducted the St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra in a well received concert.

In 2003 Nicklas Schmidt was awarded the first prize in the composition competition organized by British Tuba Quartet Tubalaté and the British Council in St. Petersburg, Russia for the piece "The day we buried Vanya". The piece featured on Tubalaté's tour in the U.S. in October 03 and is also found on their CD "Hall of Mirrors".

Music by Nicklas Schmidt has featured in a number of international festivals and concert halls, including the Tonhalle in Zürich,  MBNA Shannon International Music Festival (Ireland), Profile Intermedia (Germany), Langvad Chamber Music Days (Denmark) and the PULSAR Festival for Contemporary Music (Denmark).

Nicklas has received grants and awards from the Wilhelm Hansen Foundation, Nordeafonden Danmark,
Aksel Agerbys Mindelegat, Kolding Flisepudserlaug and several work commissions through the Danish Arts Foundation (Statens Kunstfond).
